A cross country bus and truck tour of children’s theater—what could possibly go wrong? The F#@%ing Wright Brothers takes the premise of a children’s theater tour (in this case, an educational show about the Wright Brothers called Orville and Wilbur Did It!) and turns it into its own show. What happens when you put a group of young actors together in a van on a cross country tour?
Jen (Montana Lampert Hoover) is the ambitious stage manager and van driver. Zack (Randy Merrill) has done one of these tours before and is back because he needs health insurance. Pandro, Melitta and Jasper (Harrison Chad (of Caroline, or Change), Tam Young, and Jordan J. Ford, respectively) are all thrilled to be on the tour and getting their Equity cards. And Scraggs (Jarid Faubel)—well, Scraggs is another story.
The conceit of the show is truly clever, and I’m pretty sure this is the first musical about a musical about the Wright Brothers, wrapped up in a story about a bus and truck tour. The writing is hilarious (book by David Zellnik of Yank!) and remarkably polished for a Fringe show. The songs—all in the show within the show—are really catchy, while still definitely hitting all the marks of educational kids’ songs.
Expertly directed by Abigail Zealey Bess, the pace of the show is perfect, and the cast is uniformly great. The ensemble has great chemistry and while all individually talented, they also feel like real friends. Catch this show at the Fringe if you can, but I'm sure we'll see it somewhere else soon.

...And we are ready to kick this thing off! Seriously, I could not be more proud of this production. The cast is stunning, Abigail's directing is legendary, the choreography by David Maurice Sharp has been a blast to watch take shape, Eric's songs are hook-heady gems... costumes, sets, all of it: phenomenal work. I want everyone in the world to see this!

Sex! Drugs! Children's theatre! The F#@%ing Wright Brothers is a backstage comedy about non-equity actors on a 58-city van tour of America. For two hours a day they sing about the Wright Brothers. Which leaves 22 hours for hook-ups, meltdowns, petty crime, showmances, seedy hotels, and Broadway dreams.
This play with songs was originally developed under the title Orville and Wilbur Did It! with the New Colony TheatreEnsemble in Chicago in 2013/2014. The revised version now feature five songs and was presented by The York Theatre Company's Developmental Reading Series.
Author David Zellnik says: "Creating the first draft with The New Colony was a blast, and working on this newer version - with more songs, and deeper character development - with an amazing New York cast is so exciting. I can't wait for audiences to share in the lunacy of these tours and the improbable love story at the heart of it."
Director Abigail Zealey Bess adds: "The love story isn't just between the actors in the van, but for these rather amazing children's theatre van tours themselves, which is how so many actors get their Equity cards. I'm fascinated by the giddiness and strangeness of driving through America with five other people who you love, loathe, perform with, have sex with, and, well, expose everything to. And it's the funniest show I've worked on!" Read Article here!
So excited to start rehearsals. And what a cast!: Harrison Chad, Jarid Faubel, Jordan J. Ford, Montana Lampert Hoover, Joe Medeiros, Randy Merrill, and Tam Young. All under the spectacular direction of Abigail Zealey Bess and SM Jen Wiener!
