Lovely to have Yank! back in the US for its Chicago premiere! David Zak directs a beautiful production - with gorgeous choreography (Jenna Schoppe) and excellent music direction (Robbert Ollis, who did orchestrations too). Great reviews already and we're "Jeff Recommended!"
Though the text of the musical no longer gives Stu's hometown...he has always been from the Midwest. I hope he's glad to be back!
CHICAGO SUN TIMES: "An ironic, knowing laugh rippled through the audience Thursday night as the immensely engaging musical “Yank! A WW II Love Story,” received its Chicago premiere by Pride Films and Plays. And that laughter instantly suggested the long, painful history of homosexuals in the U.S. military. The moment occurs when two of the story’s principal characters, who engage in a long and difficult relationship during their service in World War II, dream about cohabiting once they are back home. It is shortly after the war, in the mid 1940s, and one of the men consoles his lover by saying that things will get better in a few years. Of course things did not get officially better until 2010 — after decades of constantly fluctuating policies and, finally, the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Hedy Weiss, READ MORE!
BROADWAYWORLD "Just in time for Valentine's Day, Pride Films and Plays' Chicago premiere of YANK! A WWII LOVE STORY is a heartfelt, lush and romantic production that feels like a grand MGM musical. If ever there was a show to get you out of your house on a cold winter night, this would be it.
"Written by brothers David Zellnik (books and lyrics) and Joseph Zellnik (music), YANK! centers around an old journal found in a second-hand bookstore that documents a forbidden love between two enlisted soldiers during World War II. It dares us all to be brave enough to love openly and honestly." Misha Davenport. READ MORE!
